Les Caprons, les céramistes, la vierge et le taureau (book) Réunion des musées nationaux, 2003. Paperback cover, Like new. French text.
Roger Capron, born in 1922, is one of the great ceramists of our time. Student at the School of Applied Arts. In 1946, Roger Capron settled in Vallauris, he joined forces with Robert Picault and created a ceramic workshop, Callis. Jean Derval joined them in 1947. They thus participated in the “Renaissance” of ceramics in Vallauris.
In 1952, Roger Capron bought the pottery from the Font des Horts in Vallauris and created objects there with seven workers for gift shops and decorative panels.
In 1955, he married Jacqueline Hubin, known as “Jacotte”, who became his collaborator.
Until 1965, he created pieces of cast shapes typical of the 1950s in their free forms: cups, vases, bottles, stylized birds… His grid decoration, executed in paraffin reserves in black and white or in color, is characteristic of its production.
In collaboration with Jean Derval, he created the ceramic decoration of the Byblos hotel and the Hôtel de la Pinède in Saint-Tropez. This work led him to become interested in the sandstone technique. Then appear the “sandstone of the garrigue” (foliage encrusted in the clay) and the decorations made using wheels and punches.
